Hello and welcome back to the blog. This month, we're talking about the game I spent most of November playing: Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The game has certainly had lots of discussion during November. Some people really love it, and some people really hate it. I'm just going to give my thoughts, and if you have anything you'd like to discuss, feel free to leave it in the comments below.
I'm starting with some of the things I've enjoyed about the game. First off specifically from a technical production standpoint. In my experience, the game is incredibly well-optimized and looks incredible. The lighting and the assets are visually stunning from my perspective and it's one of the best-looking games I've played in a while. Secondly, I have enjoyed the relationships between the characters. Whenever Emmerich the necromancer speaks I just have a smile on my face. One of the last biggest elements I enjoyed about the game is that even though there are many quests to achieve you're not hindered by them and can just play through the main story.
That leads me to some of the things that didn't vibe with me as much. First is that outside of the companion side quests and building Rooks's relationship with the companions the side quests weren't as dynamic and interesting as I was hoping they would be. Perhaps the biggest thing that I was disappointed by was the combat. I will preface by saying it could just be the class I chose which was Mage. That said once I hit a certain point in the game I felt the depth of the combat stopped pretty early and it started to seem a little stale.
All of that said, as an overall package Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a good game. Is it like Grand Theft Auto 5 or 2018 God of War that I play year after year. No it is not but I definitely enjoyed my time with it and if you can grab it on a sale I'd recommend trying it out. The production quality from the team at Bioware is well done.
Now lets talk about my experience at MDEV 2024 the Midwest Game Developers Conference. It was wonderful. I met so many wonderful people not only while volunteering for the conference but also while working at the SoulSync City booth. I learned from so many developers around the Midwest. I was able to learn about some exciting things in store Unity 6 and some new production techniques from some panels during the conference.
If you didn't see SoulSync City also won the MDEV 2024 Best in Showcase: Student Entry. The team worked so hard to create the game and I can't say it enough that the game doesn't happen without the work of each member of the team. I and the rest of the team at Lost Water Studios can't thank the people of MDEV enough for the recognition it is incredibly humbling.
Having grown up in the Midwest and hoping that game development would be possible in the region, this conference was everything I dreamed it would be and I can't recommend enough how great of an experience it was.
November was an absolutely crazy month and it marks six months since graduation and I'm still hunting hard for production and project management jobs within the games industry and beyond.
Thank you all so much for reading and take care of yourself
