Hello and welcome back to the blog. I hope that your new year is off to a great start. In the first blog of the new year, we will talk about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. I have always been fascinated by the character of Indiana Jones. This guy travels the world, fighting bad guys, wears an awesome hat, and uses a whip to get out of sticky situations. That being said at the time of playing the game I had never seen the Indiana Jones movies (I've started watching them now that I have finished) and before that my only experience was the Lego Indiana Jones games which were also fantastic.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle flat out is an adventure game in the truest sense of the word. From start to finish every level that you're on makes you want to go and discover what is in it. Then you make it to that corner of the level and discover that you need to solve a puzzle to open the door. You finally open the door and you go into the tomb or the cave and go deeper and deeper and deeper discovering more and more interesting mysteries. Till eventually you make it to the end and the level was designed to where you can easily get back to the entrance of the tomb, as it should be.
On top of level design, one of the greatest things about the game is the way the player obtains information, whether through the adventure itself or through solving puzzles. Indy has access to a journal where everything, and I mean everything is stored. If you learn something about how to solve a puzzle you can go back to it, you want to look at a map and navigate your way to find something, in real time, you can do it all through the journal.
The story is great and when you get to the last two hours of the game and the final boss fight my goodness is it awesome and a truly cinematic game experience. Each one of the characters have a unique personality and complex motives behind them.
This is truly my kind of game because I can't stress it enough it is an adventure game. Is there action? Sure. Is there combat? Sure, but the meat and potatoes of the game are about sneaking into places to solve puzzles, secrets, and mysteries, and being on a globe-trotting adventure.
2025 is off to a great start in games and I'm looking forward to continuing talking about them. I hope you'll join me along the way.
